A Game of Thrones is the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire series by American novelist George R. R. Martin. The book debuted on August 6, 1996. A Game of Thrones won the 1997 Locus Award and was nominated for the World Fantasy Award and Nebula Award in 1997. It took a while before the book topped the New York Times Bestseller list in July 2011. The book presented a unique way of unfolding the story. It focused on different plot lines and points of view. Viserys is the one and only male heir of Aerys II of the house of Targaryen. The House of Targaryen has ruled as dragon lords over Westeros for 290 years, but their power and dragons are waning.
